Master Bedroom His & Her Closet Update| IKEA Aurdal System

When we moved into our home, our closets were, for a lack of a better word, disastrous! There were random wood shelves and wire shelves that were falling apart in both of our closet spaces. A few months into living in our home, one side of my closet completely collapsed. So I have spent the past 6+ months without a proper closet space.

My clothes have been laying in our guest bedroom on the floor and on the bed. Not that I have been leaving the house or getting dressed up at all, but I was missing the organization and also, I started to forget what I owned.

If you follow my IG (@bisousbrittany), you know that my dad has helped us so much with all of our home projects. And he graciously decided to help us redo our closet spaces. We have two closets spaces, one for me and one for my husband, so we decided to redo both!

I went to IKEA with the hopes of getting the PAX system, but unfortunately, it wast too large of a system for the space that we had. So we decided to do the Aurdal system instead. The Aurdal system is much more simple and less expensive than the PAX, which ended up being better for us in the long run, since we redid two closets.

When I went to IKEA, one of the employee’s helped quickly create a mockup of how I could design the space. He wrote down all the items we needed to pick up, so me, my mom and sister loaded up 3 carts and headed home with tons of pieces.

My poor dad spent 3 full days repairing and redoing our closets. Because my closet collapsed, my closet needed to be patched up and we ended up repainting both with the paint we have all over our home: Benjamin Moore- Barren Plain. I think this is the perfect light grey shade, which is why it is in the majority of our home. Also, at the end of each of our closet spaces, to make them appear larger, I added the IKEA Hovet mirror, which really completes the closet space. I had one Hovet mirror already, so I only had to purchase one more, which was great.

My dad did have to go to Home Depot and adjust a few things for my husbands closet because it wasn’t the exact sizing of mine. He ended up having to create special sized clothing rails for his side of the closet, but it turned out perfect!

We are so happy with how the closet spaces turned out. We have so much room to organize all of our clothes, shoes and accessories now. We actually have space to add a few more shelves to our closets. In total, I purchased 26 shelves for each closet, but I think that 30 will be perfect now that we have all of our things organized. I want to optimize all the space we have in our home and utilize it smart, so I will definitely be adding more shelving so we can store more shoes, closets, hats and accessories!

These are the Audral pieces that we used to create our closet!

How is the Aurdal system holding up? Did you have problem with the extendable rails “collapsing?”
(I’m about to install in my daughter’s closet, and there doesn’t seem to be a way to “lock” them to a certain length.)
    Thanks in advance!

      Hi Betsy,

Yes, it is holding up very well! And I actually have a lot of clothes on my rails. My dad did install this for me, so I would have to ask him if he did something special to keep them from collapsing, but as far as I know, I think he used the normal system. The only thing I can think of is that I don’t think the rails are fully extended because of the space in my closet. They are a bit shorter, and not extended to their full capacity. You may be able to return the rails at IKEA and maybe purchase something sturdier at Home Depot so that it holds more clothing and doesn’t collapse.

      I hope this helps!
